Parota and Almond Basket

The first build for a future homestead had to mean something. A gardening basket — big enough for a serious harvest, comfortable enough to carry with ease — built from an almond wood branch and leftover parota from a previous project. It was ready just in time for the first big winter garden harvest.

The almond wood branch curves naturally into a handle, comfortable in the hand and shaped by the tree rather than a saw. Parota forms the frame, its warm grain a fitting companion to the green wire mesh that holds the harvest. The edges are smooth throughout — nothing to snag, nothing to catch — and the basket is sized generously, built for a real yield rather than a token handful. Functional, handsome, and made to be carried loaded.

Build Details

The almond branch came first — its curve was the whole inspiration. From there, the design grew organically around it, with leftover parota providing the frame and the wire mesh setting the overall dimensions. No formal plans; just a design-as-you-go approach with two clear goals: smooth edges and a comfortable hold. The wire mesh was sourced first and let the proportions follow naturally, keeping the build honest and unforced. It came together just in time — and went straight to work.
